IPL HAIR REDUCTION
How does IPL Hair Reduction work?
The acronym IPL stands for “intense pulsed light”. It is a light therapy and not a traditional laser therapy. IPL is different to laser in that it uses a spectrum of pulsed light energy. Without damage to the surrounding skin structures, the absorbed light heats the dark hair which damages and destroys the regrowth potential of the follicle.
Hence, the best skin conditions for IPL hair reduction treatment, is pale skin with dark hairs.
What to expect during an IPL treatment session?
It’s important to arrive at your appointment with the area to be treated freshly shaved.
Firstly, the treated area will be cleaned to prepare the skin before your IPL technician will carries out a test patch. The IPL treatment head is then rested on the skin, when ready, the technician will press the button to fire a shot. This is repeated over the entire area and pulses of light begin destroying the unwanted hair.
Each pulse of light will have a slight warming sensation followed by what clients describe as a slight flick of a rubber band on the skin. Over the next 2-3 weeks, the dead hairs will detach from the hair follicles and fall out.
Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects from IPL hair reduction treatments are rare. However, it is normal to experience some redness of the skin and some very mild follicular swelling (similar to waxing), though this diminishes within a few hours. In rare cases, some scabbing or darker/lighter skin changes may occur but will generally subside over a short time.,/p>
How do I care for IPL hair reduction post treatment?
For the first 24 hours it is best to avoid hot showers, saunas, swimming/spa pools and excessive exercise. It’s imperative to wear sun protection on the treated areas if exposed to the sun.
To minimise the risk of complications, limit sun exposure pre and post treatment. Post treatment, most clients will return to normal activities after 24 hours.
How many treatments will I need?
A course of 6-8 treatments, preformed every 4-12 weeks is recommended for ultimate results.
The number of treatments required depends on the hair and skin colour. As well as the area being treated and hormonal influences. In order to meet your expectations, a customized treatment IPL program will be designed especially for you.
Effective hair reduction can be visible with each treatment. Most clients reporting very little regrowth after the course of treatments has been completed. Results do vary, most will achieve complete hair reduction with no or minimal regrowth. While others will require a yearly maintenance treatment top up. Any regrowth of hair will be weak, thin and lighter in colour.
